Sonim, Motorola release PoC products

Sonim and Motorola have both released push-to-talk over cellular (PoC) products, Sonim’s being an IMS-ready push-to-talk server and Motorola’s a prepaid mediation platform.

Sonim said this week that it has brought its push-to-talk server in compliance with both Open Mobile Alliance PoC specifications and 3GPP IMS standards, meaning the server can theoretically be integrated into the open interfaces of any IMS-based network. Sonim, which has led the push for the PoC standard, said the server can be deployed as an independent application like other proprietary push-to-talk solutions, but as carriers migrate to IMS the PoC server will take up residence on the next-generation networks application plane, allowing operators to mix push-to-talk features with other services.

Motorola today announced introduced a mediation solution for its own PoC platform, which allows carriers to extend push-to-talk services to prepaid subscribers. The platform opens up a massive market for carriers as 60% global wireless subscriber base are prepaid customers, Motorola said.
