Leap taps Huawei as third AWS equipment vendor
Huawei has been named a vendor for Leap Wireless’ expansion into new territory using spectrum the carrier acquired in the Advanced Wireless Services auction last year. Huawei joins Nortel and Alcatel-Lucent as an infrastructure vendor for the project, which requires new radio gear tuned to the 1.7 GHz and 2.1 GHz frequencies.

Unlike Alcatel-Lucent and Nortel, who were awarded $128 million and $135 million contracts respectively, Huawei did not reveal the value of its contract with Leap. Huawei was named a Leap vendor last August when the operator tapped it to build out its CDMA networks in Boise, Idaho; Spokane, Wash.; and Reno, Nev.
As part of the AWS rollout, Huawei will provide its CDMA 1X EV-DO Revision A base stations as well as its SoftX3000 softswitch-MSC and media gateways.
