The idea behind Project Orion is to put Sun's software releases into an “organized release chain” for mobile carriers, said Greg Wolff, group manager for carrier solutions and content programs. The single Solaris system updates will be released quarterly.

Pixo's server software manages content delivery to mobile devices. Its Java-based software allows carriers to centralize digital content management, ensure secure content downloading and customize subscriber interfaces. The privately held Java developer had a prior reseller agreement with Sun, and Canada's Bell Mobility is among its carrier customers.

“We have been working with them for a year or so, and the component architecture of their software made it easier to integrate it with our product stack,” said Jennifer Hom, marketing manager for Sun's software systems group.
