WI-FI OR BUST

Pyramid Research has released what at first glance appears to be a highly implausible study on Wi-Fi. The study projects 700 million Wi-Fi users by 2008, a figure that more than doubles most other research firm estimates. But Pyramid is sticking by its analysis. Most other Wi-Fi studies assume that Wi-Fi will be popular mainly in the developed world. Pyramid disagrees, saying the vast majority of the world's Wi-Fi users will reside in developing countries such as China, where a lack of legacy telecom and data infrastructure will propel the cheap and versatile Wi-Fi into all strata of daily use.

“We're not just looking at laptops here,” said John Yunker, a Pyramid analyst and co-author of the study. “Wi-Fi has a lot more applications, and the developing world is primed to take advantage of them.”
