Trillium Unveils Protocol Software
Trillium Digital Systems (www.trillium.com) announced the availability of two new 3G wireless software protocols that decrease development time for building out IP networks. The software protocol stacks consist of the radio access network application protocol (RANAP) software and the latest version of GPRS tunneling protocol (GTP) software.

Trillium’s customers are the OEMs, rather than the carriers. According to Mark Demange, Airnet Communications (www.aircom.com) vice president of engineering, the software allows his company to be more responsive to carriers looking for fast and cost-effective solutions.
RANAP portable software is used for 3G’s radio network controllers (RNCs). It’s the radio network layer signaling protocol for the interface between the radio access network and the core network. RANAP also handles signaling between RNC and 3G serving GPRS support node (SGSN) and between RNC and the 3G mobile switching interface. It provides the signaling channel to pass messages between user equipment and the core network transparently.
The tunneling protocol software provides signaling and data transfer procedures that define the protocol between the GPRS support nodes within the GPRS and UMTS backbone networks. GTP specifies a tunnel control and management protocol that allows the SGSN to offer GPRS services for a mobile phone or a modem. In addition to SGSN, the GTP software is used to develop the gateway GPRS support node and the charging gateway function, which interfaces with the carrier’s billing system.
