TDMA Upgrade Costs Continue to Rack Up

AT&T Wireless Services said last week it expects to spend $1 billion on its 3G network upgrade. This is in addition to the $2.5 billion it has already committed to its GPRS upgrade.

John Zeglis, AT&T Wireless chairman and CEO, told investors at the Lehman Brothers telecommunications conference in Florida that the company plans to spend a few hundred million dollars to transition to EDGE and another $1 billion on its final upgrade to 3G.

This follows on the heels of Cingular Wireless’ commitment to deals with Nokia, Siemens and Ericsson for $4 billion to upgrade its TDMA networks to GSM/EDGE.

Zeglis said the total cost of the upgrade will break down to about to about $25 per wireless subscriber.
