RFS tower-mounted amplifier keeps it quiet

Radio Frequency Systems, based in Meridien, Conn., has unveiled a new low-noise tower-mounted amplifier (TMA) in a light and compact form factor — weighing in at about 20 lbs. Specifically designed for UMTS-on-PCS/cellular-band overlay applications, the new amplifier provides the gain boost required for wireless data applications, in a package tailored to minimize installation time and costs.

The RFS wideband TMA provides carriers with higher data subscriber rates without reducing capacity, by improving base station receiver sensitivity and enhancing overall cell coverage. Providing a dual-band full-duplex amplifier solution for both cellular and PCS bands, the new wideband amplifier has a nominal gain of 12 dB.

The new TMA series offers four configurations: co-located cellular/PCS with amplification in both systems; PCS-only with a bypass on the cellular bands (for future support of cellular co-location); PCS-only; and cellular-only. The TMA's dual-duplex configuration enables the use of a single feeder for both transmit and receive paths. Its integrated diplexer obviates the need for an external diplexer at the tower top, thus reducing tower loading.

Provided in dual duplex format, the new TMA offers single feeder receive/transmit connectivity in both the cellular and PCS bands. The unit is equipped with a bypass switch in both bands.

Venturi Wireless upgrades V3000 server

Venturi Wireless, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., has announced new features for its carrier-grade Venturi V3000 Server. The new features in Version 3.3 are focused on helping operators improve application performance, even in degraded RF conditions where weak signal strength, interference, fading or high network load often cause speeds to drop significantly. This high level of performance is critical for users surfing the Internet, transmitting photos and using other broadband applications. Carriers can now better monitor the performance of laptops, SmartPhones and Pocket PCs that incorporate Venturi's VClient software. The V3000 also uses adaptive airlink optimization to improve the performance of TCP applications.

Power-One announces no-bus point-of-load converters for power management

Power-One, based in Camarillo, Calif., has announced the availability of three new no-bus point-of-load (POL) converters: the 7-amp ZY1207, 15-amp ZY1115 and 20-amp ZY1120. These digital POLs can help telecom and Internet service providers solve frequently experienced power-management problems via pin strapping, and the use of only one trim resistor and capacitor.

The company's digital no-bus Z-1000 POLs support functions such as sequencing with configurable delays, tracking and cascading between multiple outputs; feedback-loop compensation parameters that can be optimized for specific applications; noise and EMI control via frequency synchronization and programmable phase interleave; output of current and temperature measurements via monitoring pins; and current sharing of up to 10 no-bus POLs.
