With industry-standard APIs, PacketIN and Softswitch give carriers tools to help them offer new services. These services can be those developed by Lucent, by third-party application developers or by the carrier itself.

The enhancements include upgrades to the PacketIN Application Hosting Environment, a software-hosting platform that allows for service deployment on softswitch-based networks.

Lucent has introduced a new session initiation protocol proxy server that allows carriers to deliver services to all IP endpoints, such as mobile Internet-enabled devices or IP phones.

Another feature of the hosting environment is its mediation capability that supports emerging APIs including Parlay and the 3GPP’s open services architecture. This capability provides security and service-brokering capabilities for both fixed and mobile packet networks, helping carriers to create interconnections between geographically and technologically disparate networks.
