Alcoa Goes Wireless

Alcoa last Friday acquired majority ownership of the stock of Pacific 17, a wireless service company engaged in the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of wireless sites and multisite networks.

Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed. AFL Telecommunications, a part of Alcoa Fujikura Ltd., will manage Pacific 17.

Alcoa, primarily known for its aluminum production and fabrication, has significant ties to telecom with its central office, broadband and outside plant applications.

"With the acquisition of Pacific 17, we expect to achieve a similar leadership position for providing high-performance services to the wireless market as well,” said Frank Larence, AFL president.
