Key to the operator’s interest in WalkingHotSpot is a server element that communicates with all devices using the application. An operator deploying the TapRoot server will be able to track customers using WalkingHotSpot and institute tiered data plans accordingly, TapRoot CEO Bob Bicksler said. An operator can charge a higher rate for tethered smartphone plans using WalkingHotSpot or charge per device connected. The platform gives them the flexibility to offer something in between smartphone data plans and broadband access plans, Bicksler said.

“There is a whole market not being addressed with data cards,” Bicksler said. “[Operators] recognize that there will be a huge push for this kind of service. Not everyone is ready to sign up for a $40 to $60 a month data plan.”

Though no operator has yet agreed to deploy TapRoot’s server, Bicksler said they are waiting to see if WalkingHotSpot performs as an independent service. If there is a groundswell of interest in the service, Bicksler expects that operators will sign on, offering the application directly to their customers. Launched just ahead of CTIA Wireless IT & Entertainment, TapRoot will sell the WalkingHotSpot client download from its Website for $25 for a 1-year license or for $7 for one month.
