Messaging software and service vendor Critical Path today announced that Telecom Italia will be using the vendor’s Memova Mobile consumer mobile e-mail platform to support mobile e-mail capabilities for its broadband subscribers.

Customers in Italy who have the carrier’s ALICE mobile broadband service can send and receive their ALICE e-mail with any MMS-enabled mobile phone. A statement from Critical Path said that many consumers do not have a smart phone, and most are not willing to spend a lot of time and money setting up new data services. Memova Mobile will provide a mobile e-mail service that is easy to set up and use for 98% of Telecom Italia’s mobile phone subscribers, the companies said.

ALICE subscribers can try the new service free of charge for the first month. The service can be set up in a matter of minutes on Telecom Italia’s ALICE Web site (www.alice.it) or by sending a few simple text messages from the phone.
