Ollila leaving Nokia next year; Kallasvuo taking over

Nokia announced Monday that chairman and CEO Jorma Ollila will depart the company's top executive job in June 2006, and that Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, who currently leads the firm's handset group, will be his successor.

Ollila, 54, will continue as non-executive chairman of Nokia. He has been chairman for the last sis years, and CEO for the last 13, but has hinted in recent years that he might be close to a gradual transition out of the leadership role, according to company watchers and published reports.

Kallasvuo, 52, once lead Nokia's efforts in the U.S. market. In addition to becoming CEO next year, he will also take over as president and chief operating officer in October of this year. The company's current president, Pekka Ala-Pietila, is resigning.
