The survey of 1800 gamers was conducted for Nokia by Nielsen Entertainment, and included participants in China, Germany, India, Spain, Thailand and the United States. It found that game-players used their mobile phones to play games for an average of 28 minutes per session, and most (80%) play at least once a week. About one-third play games on their mobile phones every day. Usage was longest in India at 39 minutes per session, on average.

After trailing Nokia next-generation games, almost two-thirds of those surveyed preferred those games to existing Java 2D and 3D games, based on graphical quality and the ability to use the phone for other purposes while downloading a game, the survey showed. A large majority--83%--said good gameplay was a key motivator to buying a game while replay-ability (79%) and game genre (78%) also ranked high.

The survey also found that 43% of respondents preferred to trial multiple games in a given week before deciding what to buy, and 65% said they would buy a game outright rather than buy a subscription.
