Sights Set on NLOS
RADWIN has announced the general availability of WinLink 1000, a point-to-point, non-line-of-sight (NLOS) broadband wireless system based on 802.11 Wi-Fi technology, but targeting 802.16 WiMAX-like performance. The company, part of the RAD group, is pitching point-to-point NLOS connectivity as a replacement for T-1/E-1 leased lines and backhaul operations for carrier and enterprise applications.

Though 802.16-based WiMAX systems have not been officially certified yet, RADWIN and other vendors have started offering equipment with similar characteristics and bandwidth capabilities. WiMAX certifications will begin shortly after the WiMAX Forum interoperability test event coming up in the next few months.
Built on industry standard Wi-Fi, WinLink 1000 uses proprietary physical layer and MAC adaptations to overcome the range, capacity and quality of service limitations of 802.11. The unit is a carrier-class system that operates in the unlicensed bands.
The new system can be deployed in the networks telcos and cellular carriers, as well as enterprises. Service providers can use it to establish metro area networks and offer broadband to rural and remote areas, while cellular operators can substitute their T-1/E-1 leased lines and reap substantial savings on their monthly operational expenses. In addition, a variety of enterprise and vertical markets like universities, schools, municipalities, utilities, hospitals and other campus environments can use WinLink 1000 to wirelessly connect between remote sites.
