Location Information

IntelliNet Technologies has released an any time interrogation (ATI) version of its GSMMAP Application Development Environment. IntelliNet's GSMMAP/ATI is a set of GSMMAP-based messages that can provide the means for carriers to obtain the location information of a mobile device to extend personalized 3G network service to them.

The ATI can locate, within a small range, the position of a particular GSM wireless device. It allows subscribers to use 3G handsets to obtain information from an IP network and assimilate it to location-based applications. Once the ATI is implemented, users, while away from home, can access information about the areas they are visiting. Examples include finding restaurants and making reservations, locating nearby hotels and booking a room, or receiving directions and maps.

Predictive Text

Solving the problem of typing on mobile devices, Eatoni Ergonomics has introduced LetterWise and WordWise predictive text-entry software. LetterWise is a direct replacement for the familiar multitap system. It requires a negligible amount of memory in handsets and can run on a SIM card.

WordWise is a linguistically optimized replacement for word-guessing algorithms. WordWise doesn't use a dictionary but, rather, works on the statistics of linguistic patterns. These statistical patterns allow WordWise to support entry of proper names, URLs, abbreviations, slang and other words not in a dictionary.

Because it doesn't require constant verification from the user, WordWise can be touch typed, and because it doesn't require a dictionary, WordWise uses less than half as much memory as a dictionary-based method.

Indoor Coverage

The Digivance indoor coverage solution from ADC is an all-digital distributed antenna system that transports RF signals digitally within or between buildings. This is the initial product of ADC's Digivance family of digital RF transport solutions for managing and increasing wireless coverage and capacity.

Through ADC's technology, the solution digitizes all signals in the full allocated bandwidth, digitally transports them over fiber and reconstructs the signals at the far end.

GPS Application

Airbiquity, an integrator of wireless voice and data solutions for mobile devices, and Televigation, a provider of wireless phone navigation technology, have developed a GPS-enabled, voice-activated, location-driven application in a complete, end-to-end solution, representing a new revenue opportunity for wireless carriers, ASPs, Internet portals, telematics providers, roadside-assistance providers and personal security companies.

This application enables location services, such as traffic reports, turn-by-turn driving directions and nearby business searches, to be based on the actual position of the user. The GPS-based application resolves the most common issue for wireless callers with location-sensitive services: They need to know their exact position, which is not obvious when driving on a highway or in an unknown city.

Outdoor Switch

Wireless, Inc. has introduced StreamNet 1200, an outdoor ATM switch. Network carriers can employ the StreamNet 1200 to build wireless mesh networks and reliably deliver voice and data services over ATM to their customers in multi-tenant and multi-dwelling units. This solution supports ATM-25-based networks and integrates with Wireless, Inc's Link AX radio, an ATM-25 point-to-point radio carrying 16Mb/s of bi-directional traffic operating in the U-NII band.

Virtual Radio

The Virtual Fiber Radio (VFR) from Telaxis communications is designed to operate at frequencies from 40GHz to 320GHz with data rates from 155Mb/s to 1.2Gb/s and higher. This will enable direct fiber-optic connection to wireless units and will transparently transmit fiber-optic signals over a wireless link without conventional modems.

By using the large amounts of spectrum above 40GHz, the VFR is less complex than traditional millimeter-wave radios constrained to licensed spectrum below 40GHz.

Prototype units in development will operate at 51GHz and 84GHz and will provide OC-12 data rates of 622Mb/s with a single transceiver at either end of the link.

Network Capacity

ScoreBoard provides a fully integrated business solution that enables carriers to maximize capital efficiency by increasing the capacity of the existing and deployed network infrastructure. The ScoreBoard process literally “scores” a carrier's network, providing real data to understand the performance of its mobile network, determine a plan for improving current service and forecast a path for future growth.

Through ScoreBoard's process, carriers can maximize their existing network assets by identifying and resolving capacity-robbing network interference and over-subscribed cell towers that hold back network performance. Networks powered by ScoreBoard can increase average cell-site capacity by 20% to 40% and eliminate network interference by as much as 80%.

Network Expansion

MetroReach Focus from LGC Wireless facilitates wireless network expansion by reducing equipment cost and deployment time. With MetroReach Focus, wireless carriers can centralize network resources for multiple areas in one location. Because radio channels and other resources now can be allocated easily where needed, operators avoid the expense of deploying expensive infrastructure that is used fully only during peak traffic hours.

Repeaters

Allgon Systems' range of compact repeaters with dual-band capacity enables expansion of indoor cellular coverage. The repeater offers any dual combination of 800MHz, 900MHz, 1.8GHz and 1.9GHz bands, and is ready for use in 3G UMTS networks by adding a 2.1GHz band. This gives carriers a repeater solution for split bandwidth blocks. Also, in dual-band applications, the repeater supports dual-band antennas without additional external hardware. Using Allgon's adjustable-bandwidth technology, the product offers carriers remote control and use of both bands, adapting to changes in network planning schemes without site visits.

Antennas

Gabriel's new 6-beam panel antenna, the Mbeam, is an unobtrusive panel antenna that operates at 2.4GHz to 2.49GHz and has a beam coverage of 90 degrees while using 6-sector beams that feature high-gain and low sidelobes. The combination of the multibeam and panel design allows carriers to reduce site investment and clutter while accomodating six times the subscriber capacity compared to a typical site using common directional antennas. MBeam offers carriers site-investment savings by reducing the need for additional equipment and site leasing, allowing for swift network launches.

Gabriel High Gain SectorWave base-station antennas for the 24GHz and 28GHz frequency bands are 90-degree, base-station, sector antennas featuring high gains as well as optimized azimuth pattern coverage with minimal adjacent sector overlapping.
