Antenna Testing Solution Cushcraft's DirectLink Engineering Evaluation Kit provides system engineers with an opportunity to test antenna solutions in the marketplace with five mounting options. Typical deployment applications include PCS/DCS microcells, DECT and low-tier PCS/DCS coverage, wireless local loop, ISM band, wireless LAN and other RF data-collection applications.

The DirectLink medium-gain antenna comes in a choice of three frequency ranges: 1,710MHz to 1,880MHz, 1,850MHz to 1,990MHz, and 2,300MHz to 2,500MHz. It is comprised of a microstrip element and broadband feed circuit that provides 7.5dBi minimum gain across each band. The antenna is linearly polarized, provides a nominal 60-degree by 77-degree 3dB beam-width and has a VSWR less than 1.5:1.

Choices of mounting options include a +/-30 articulating wall mount, standard wall mount, mast mount and universal wall/mast mount that permits up to +/-90 degrees of vertical or horizontal main lobe steering.

Digital-to-Analog Converter The AD9761 from Analog Devices is a dual 10-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) solution that comes in a 28-pin SSOP package. This converter is the first member of the TxDAC+ family of transmit devices to integrate application enhancements to the company's TxDAC core DACs. The AD9761 is designed for both wideband and narrowband communication applications employing quadrature modulation schemes where I and Q information is processed during transmit operations. Because each DAC provides up to 9.5 effective number of bits of inband dynamic performance, the carrier-to-noise ratio of the reconstructed I and Q channels is optimal. The DACs support either single-ended or differential interfaces.

Messaging Service TWS' wireless messaging service, called bulletin, allows subscribers to receive e-mail generated messages on their wireless phones with the capability to send a reply to the originators of the messages and forward any message to a fax machine. Eliminating the need to connect to a corporate LAN or Internet e-mail service, bulletin subscribers can use their phones as a single device. Benefits of the service include the ability to receive custom short messages, notification of scheduled meetings and delivery of specialized information on demand directly on a mobile phone.

This software package ties into a network operator's digital message center to gain the ability to forward information to a subscriber's wireless phone, and is not dependent on a system's air interface, which makes it capable of operating with GSM, PCS 1900, CDMA or TDMA systems via any standard digital wireless phone.

For information, visit the web site at www.tws-inc.com.

Performance Monitoring InfoRad's AlphaPage Monitor is a software package that monitors large wireless paging and messaging networks, automatically transmitting notification if the messaging systems fail. It is designed to benefit paging providers, PCS providers and large customers of wireless messaging services.

AlphaPage Monitor automatically sends check-in messages at predetermined time intervals to a receiver connected to the system. If the monitor system does not receive a check-in page at the expected interval, it uses an alternate messaging network to send an alert message to a list of people who should be notified in the event of a system failure. The same people are notified when the system is working again. Also, AlphaPage Monitor prioritizes notification of any system outages. For example, if the outage continues for a specified length of time after the first alert page is transmitted, a second alert notification is sent to another group of people.

For information, call 216-531-1313.

Surge Protection Packaging Joslyn Electronics Systems' surge protection condition monitoring system provides the user with the ability to determine the percent of protection remaining in each transient voltage surge suppression module. Monitoring can be done visually at the site or via remote dial-up modem over normal phone lines. Information such as power quality, outages and as many as four environmental site alarms also are accessible with this product.

Also, Joslyn offers a power-protection solution for wireless base stations. The integrated surge-protection package allows many available configurations and hardware choices.

A cellular customer with a poorly working phone is a case of churn just waiting to happen. The PhoneCheck wireless phone performance monitor, introduced by Corsair Communications, allows you to spot the problem phones on your system and take the necessary steps to retain the customers who are using those phones, especially the customers who are most valuable to your operation.

PhoneCheck operates through Corsair's PhonePrint cellular fraud prevention system. The PhonePrint network consists of radio frequency units located in cell sites and linked to the PhoneCheck data server. PhoneCheck takes RF-quality measurements of your subscriber equipment, which are analyzed and used to develop a performance database. Information is directly available to your engineering and customer-care personnel.

William R. Taliaferro, director of product marketing for Corsair, said in ongoing field tests, PhoneCheck has found problem phones more than 70% of the time, sometimes before the customer realizes he has a problem. Without PhoneCheck, carriers respond to complaints by sending technicians to the customer or having the customer bring his phone to the service center.

When customers do call in with complaints, PhoneCheck helps diagnose the problem by tracking history, actions taken and current disposition for every record. It also helps track equipment problems due to manufacturers.
