SAR-Compliance Test
Using a 6-axis, compact industrial robot with probe-positioning
accuracy of ±0.04mm, the specific absorption rate (SAR)-compliance
test system from IndexSAR can measure SAR from wireless devices using
an upright generic phantom head. The upright phantom geometry uses less
liquid and has low evaporation and easy phone positioning. A flexible
phone-positioning device accepts most portable devices with minimum
measurement influence and has graduated settings to give the fixed
positions as specified in the draft CENELEC and IEEE standards.
Facilities are provided to give schematic overlays of individual
telephone shapes to show the position of maximum SAR on the phone. The
probe has an isotropicity of less than ±1dB in liquid and a
diameter of less than 5mm. A full range of phantom liquids is available
as required by the standards.

Wireless VPN
Columbitech has released a public beta version of its wireless VPN for
enterprises. The technology provides corporate users with secure
wireless access to the corporate network without compromising
performance or convenience. It bypasses common user frustrations
associated with wireless data communication such as download
interruption, logging in repeatedly and dependency on a single wireless
network. Features include support for GPRS, CDPD, Bluetooth and
wireless LAN, as well as session resume and transaction recovery.

GPS/CDMA Handset
Samsung's SPH-N300 handset meets the FCC mandate for Enhanced 911
(E-911) capabilities. The N300 features an embedded GPS chip necessary
for using the E-911 emergency location safety feature, as well as other
location-based services.
Equipped with the Open-wave Mobile Browser 4.1, the N300 allows
users to connect to the Internet, view and send e-mail or browse the
Web. Users also can use the built-in personal information manager with
a high-resolution LCD screen. It comes with voice-activated dialing and
the T9 text input software, which acts as a predictive speller.
Multilingual display capabilities and SMS where available are other
perks.

Power Amplifiers
Anadigics has introduced two InGaP HBT power amplifiers for use in
multimode, multiband CDMA handsets that support 2.5G CDMA applications.
The AWT6105 and AWT6106 meet the performance requirements of
next-generation CDMA handsets by providing linearity and efficiency in
a small module package. The AWT6105 is designed for cellular CDMA, CDMA
1X and AMPS applications in the 824MHz to 849MHz range; and the AWT6106
is targeted for PCS CDMA and CDMA 1X applications operating at 1.85GHz
to 1.91GHz. Both devices combine the necessary passive components for
full compensation and 50W input/output matching.

Connectors
A series of high-amperage, low-insertion-force contacts from Amphenol
Industrial Operations is available for a number of the company's
existing high-power and environmental connector product lines. The
contact design, developed jointly by Amphenol and KonneKtech, allows
the Radsok connector to carry high-amperage current while lowering
overall millivolt drop and reducing the temperature rise commonly
experienced in conventional contact designs. Typical applications
include battery connections, stationary power sets, generators,
alternators and base stations.

Mapping Application
MapObjects 2.1 is the newest version of ESRI's set of embedded mapping
and GIS components. It features support for AutoCAD 2000 DWG files,
ActiveX Data Objects, image catalogs, ArcSDE 8.1 support, the latest
ESRI projection engine, data previously included in ESRI's ArcView
StreetMap for geocoding, custom symbols for chart rendering and a new
run-time deployment utility for application distribution. MapObjects
2.1 can connect to any ArcSDE version and allow users to view it. Users
also can identify and select versions based on version names. To help
users develop Web-based mapping and GIS applications, MapObjects 2.1
has built-in compatibility with ESRI's ArcIMS Web connectivity
middleware. It enables users to put customizable maps on the Internet
using ArcIMS technology.

Battery
EnerSys has increased the life expectancy of its REL-B VRLA family of
extended-life batteries to 15 years. The REL-B has a standard industry
footprint, the same as the EnerSys NP series of VRLA batteries, so it
requires no redesigns or product substitutions. By incorporating
several internal design elements such as advanced alloy and grid
technologies, EnerSys reduced the rate of positive-plate corrosion on
its REL-B battery. The result is less grid distortion and better
contact between the grid and active material, optimizing the battery's
operating performance and increasing life expectancy over the typical
3-to-5-year industry standard. Available in rated capacities from 15Ah
to 65Ah at the 20-hour rate and from 9Ah to 39Ah at the 1-hour rate,
the REL-B series of batteries can be used for telecom and UPS
applications with distributed power or reliable backup requirements.
Safety features include a flame-retardant housing, a low-pressure
rubber safety valve and an explosion-arresting ceramic filter.
