Wireless Java Platform
Aligo’s M-1 Server is a wireless Java platform that enables Java
developers to build and deploy enterprise apps quickly. The M-1 Server
helps create wireless apps such as CRM, ERP and field-force automation
so that enterprises can bring wireless business to their partners,
employees and customers rapidly. Designed to eliminate the complexities
and high costs of wirelessly enabling enterprises, the M-1 is a
downloadable solution that any Java developer can use to start building
sophisticated apps immediately without having to learn wireless
protocols, programs or markup languages. The M-1 complements and
leverages existing software and hardware, connecting front-end and
back-end infrastructures and integrating with all enterprise-wide
systems.

Bar Code/Card Scanners
Apriva’s M500 Magcard reader and B500I Bar code scanner connect
to RIM wireless hand-held devices and allow users to read bar codes,
magnetic data stripes on credit cards and smart cards. The M500 scans a
variety of cards with barcodes and magnetic stripes. That information
then is transmitted via an Infrared Data (IrDA) port to IrDA-enabled
printers. The B500I scans any of 40 different types of 1D bar codes.
Both lightweight devices attach to the bottom of the RIM hand-held. The
peripherals operate on a variety of networks, including the Motient
wireless data network. Motient and Apriva announced a partnership
agreement in early April.

Wireless Internet Optimization
BlueKite’s software for the Pocket PC transforms wireless data
throughput of 19.2kb/s into an experience equal to or better than a
56kb/s. BlueKite’s technology delivers a faster Web-browsing
experience through caching and compression algorithms that reduce
unnecessary data transmissions over wireless networks. Users can access
the Internet, intranet or Web-based apps such as e-mail, SFA and CRM
with BlueKite software on a mobile device. In the United States,
BlueKite software is available to users of Sprint PCS’
(www.sprintpcs.com) Wireless Web service. Several European providers,
including BT Cellnet (www.btcellnet.net), also use BlueKite for
wireless data services.

Faster Data Connections
Fourelle Systems’ Venturi solution speeds up the data-transfer
rate by using advanced compression and efficient transmission
technology to reduce the amount of Internet data sent and received over
the airwaves. Standard Internet protocols and apps were not designed
for wireless networks. Running IP-based apps over low-speed wireless
links means high connect times and pay-by-use charges. Fourelle is
addressing this problem by creating faster connections for enterprise
customers. On average, a wireless user will see a 125% performance
improvement using Venturi while browsing.
