Handset Estimation Revision

Shipping Estimates by Technology

The first half of 2001 will be a challenging period for the mobile handset industry, according to UBS Warburg (www.ubsw.com). And to illustrate this statement, the analyst has lowered its shipped-handset estimate to 450 to 475 million units in 2001. That's down from 550 to 560 million units previously predicted.

In Global Mobile 2001 Handset Preview, the authors blame the revised lower forecast on several weeks of excess phone inventory, slower-than-expected growth of the voice market and sluggish uptake of data services.

According to the report, “No vendor will come away from this situation unscathed.”
