CTIA Wireless 2005

  • Sprint awarded Ericsson a piece of its IP multimedia subsystems build and named the vendor to act as systems integrator for the project, requiring Ericsson to coordinate the implementation of six to eight other developers' gear into Sprint's network. Sprint plans to deploy elements of the IMS layer next year and migrate its voice services to VoIP as soon as it rolls out its EV-DO revision A upgrade.

  • Cingular Wireless announced a roaming agreement with Wi-Fi hot spot operator Wayport. The agreement will enable Cingular subscribers to access select Wayport neutral-host high-speed Wi-Fi network hot spots in hundreds of hotels and airports.

  • Motorola has deployed its multimedia services center in Verizon Wireless's network, supporting its entire 1X and consumer EV-DO subscriber base. Verizon has committed to powering its entire MMS platform with Motorola technology, which now supports 40 million subscribers on Verizon's network.

  • Nortel Networks and Verizon Wireless will perform live market trials of EV-DO revision A technology next year, the first announced U.S. test of the 3G upgrade technology. Revision A is a software and module upgrade for Nortel's EV-DO gear. The trial should coincide with the final stages of Verizon's nationwide 3G service rollout.

  • Software and services provider Openwave Systems announced an extension of its relationship with America Online that incorporates AOL's new Instant Pictures feature into its mobile AOL Instant Messenger service, enabling AIM subscribers to share photos from mobile phones to PCs or any combination thereof.

  • SmartVideo Technologies and Fox Sports announced development of a sports video channel that will broadcast highlights and events drawn from Fox's sports programming. The service will target OS-run smartphones and PDAs and is supported by most media players.
