Briefing Room

As telecom carriers scramble to add bandwidth to satisfy the demands of high-speed Internet and data networks, LMDS and other broadband fixed-wireless technologies are proving to be a viable solution. A recent study by The Strategis Group forecasts strong wireless-broadband-service revenues in various regions for 2003 and 2008. The study credits that potential to its ability to support multiple applications, including voice, video and high-speed data, without the need to dig up streets.

Wireless Review's ongoing series of random calls to carriers determines how a customer might be treated and the accuracy of distributed information.

BELLSOUTH MOBILITY Total Hold Time: 0 minutes

Transfers/IVR Layers: 3 WR: My spouse has your service, and I saw a special on TV last night about cancer, and I was a little bit worried about the phone causing cancer.

CSR: Actually there is no worry. I work for the company. I use mine all day long, and if you will note what they said also was that we did research here and found that it was not harmful to your health.

WR: Oh, I didn't see that part.

CSR: Well, yeah. They said a lot of different things and said a lot of different research programs had been done, and if you already have a cell phone and are concerned about it, you can get an earpiece. There is no proof stating here in the states with our research programs and testing that it is harmful to your health.

WR: So your company itself has done testing?

CSR: We have here in the states. In the program, they did a lot of testing outside of the U.S. But what I am telling you is that we have had testing done that says it is not harmful to you. But I said if you are concerned about it, and you have a cell phone, you can always get the earphone, and that way the phone won't be connected to your ears.

WR: But if you then put the phone in your lap, couldn't you get cancer somewhere else?

CSR: But back to what I said. I am not saying you can get anything. I said the tests were done that said it wasn't harmful.

WR: It seemed on the special that it was pretty harmful.

CSR: Do you have cellular service already with us?

WR: My spouse does. That's why I was concerned.

CSR: I don't blame you. I would be concerned, too.

WR: I was thinking of getting a wireless phone, and I saw a special on TV a couple nights ago on how they might cause cancer. And before I get one...

CSR: If you look up the FDA government on the Internet, it totally contradicts everything that was said about causing cancer.

WR: How can I find that on the Internet?

CSR: I can give you the address. That might be something better to go by what the government says instead of 20/20. (Laughs.) I can give you the full address: http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/ocd/mobilphone.html.
