Carrier Pushes for Cellular Civility

Wireless phone users are getting a lesson in etiquette from Pacific Bell Wireless and other SBC Communications affiliates, which see the time as ripe for quelling "wireless wrath" -- the pedestrian equivalent to road rage. SBC Communications reported that 59% of the participants surveyed would rather visit the dentist than sit next to someone talking on a wireless phone in a movie theater.

"A majority of Americans give themselves an "A" or a "B" for their wireless phone manners, but only half as many believe others are as polite," said Peggy Post, spokesperson for the wireless etiquette campaign and great-granddaughter-in-law of Emily Post. "I think the key here is really awareness -- combining common sense with consideration for others."

Wireless etiquette guidelines include keeping phone ringers on vibrate or at a low volume, always answering a call within one or two rings, avoiding live conversation interruptions by not taking a call unless it's very important, and timing calls appropriately -- no calling too early in the morning or too late at night and placing business calls only during business hours.
