• The FCC has proposed extending the deadline for upgrading digital wireless systems to transmitting text telephone (TTY) 911 calls to Dec. 31, 2001. The FCC already granted more than 100 temporary waivers after it recognized the technical challenges of passing the Baudot-encoded audio tones. In January, Lucent Technologies unveiled a solution, and ATIS is editing Ericsson's solution as the standard for GSM networks.

Reply comments on TTY/digital compatibility are due to the FCC by July 19.

Should the debate come to fisticuffs, at least they're outside the jurisdiction of Judge Jim Bob Darnell, who levies a $100 fine on anyone whose pager or phone rings in his Lubbock, TX, courtroom. State law allows judges to fine anyone they perceive as in contempt of court.
