• The FCC has proposed extending the deadline for upgrading digital wireless systems to transmitting text telephone (TTY) 911 calls to Dec. 31, 2001. The FCC already granted more than 100 temporary waivers after it recognized the technical challenges of passing the Baudot-encoded audio tones. In January, Lucent Technologies unveiled a solution, and ATIS is editing Ericsson's solution as the standard for GSM networks.
