Sierra Wireless is one of the principle makers of data cards for the cellular industry, along with competitor Novatel Wireless, selling both standalone PC cards and modems as well as embedded modules to other vendors. AirLink meanwhile specializes in industrial-strength telematics modems and routers for the vertical markets, selling into the transportation, public safety, finance and general government sectors.

Sierra will pay $10 million in cash and issue 1.3 million in new shares to AirLink’s shareholders, giving them approximately a 4.8% stake in the combined company. Based on Sierra’s closing sale price today of $13.44 a share that stake would be worth about $17 million. AirLink CEO Andrew Berman will become senior vice president and general manager of Sierras Mobile and M2M group.
