And in the city where Verizon first broke ground with FTTP--Keller, Texas--the telecom giant will now be able to offer its FiOS television service. Verizon was awarded a cable franchise in Keller, its fifth franchise to date, according to a company spokesman.
To date, Verizon has not yet begun offering video services, but plans to later this year. The company has been offering high-speed data and voice over its fiber optic network, and in Keller, has captured a 20% market share in the first four-and-a-half months of operation.
In addition to issuing an overall progress report, Verizon also announced that its FiOS broadband services are now available in Falls Church, Va., and in the Montgomery County, Md., communities of Chevy Chase View, Garrett Park, Glenmont, Kensington and Wheaton.
Other highlights of the progress report:
- Verizon has announced specific communities where work is underway in 10 states, including California, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Texas and Virginia. The company will continue to announce additional states and new communities in states it has already announced throughout 2005. For the year, Verizon expects to double its FTTP deployment.
- In Texas, Verizon has completed construction of its FTTP network in Keller, Fort Worth, Wylie, Sachse and Rowlett, and has made its FiOS service widely available to its local phone customers. In Keller, Sachse, Westlake and Wylie, Verizon has video franchise agreements. The fiber-optic network is under construction in 11 other cities including Westlake, Southlake, Irving, Grapevine, Colleyville, Lewisville, Flower Mound, Highland Village, Carrollton, Plano and Murphy. Pre-construction engineering work is underway in additional northern suburbs of the Dallas-Fort Worth area that are within Verizon territory.
