Flarion lays on the capacity
Flarion Technologies has released upgraded Flash OFDM gear to target triple-play IP services over mobile networks, claiming it can blow out of the water the standard model of counting MBs over the WAN wireless network and deliver a full 1 GB of data to every subscriber each month.

Called Flexband, the new platform works over both 1.25 MHz and 5 MHz multicarrier systems and is theoretically capable of 15.9 Mb/s peak data rates and 186 VoIP calls per sector, Flarion said. Deployed, the network will be able to sustain 6 Mb/s of throughput over a 5 MHz channel, while a 1.25 MHz channel would support a 2.5 Mb/s sustainable sector throughput, which would only degrade to 800 kb/s at the cell's edge.
Those kinds of data speeds can easily support both high-speed data and voice service and because of the added weight on the uplink, also allow for broadcast IP video, Flarion officials said. In addition, those services can be extended to a sizable customer base as a single Flexband 5 MHz carrier could support up to 600 customers each consuming up to a GB of data per month for about $10, Flarion said.
CEO Ray Dolan said Flarion has been working with carriers and OEM partners to develop and validate the new technology and felt that the system was now ready for launch. The technology has gone through field tests with carriers, but Flarion has not yet announced any customers.
