D2, based in Santa Barbara, Calif., is known for VoIP and IPTV software, and in particular for the mCUE converged communications client, an embedded multimedia application for device OEMs and ODMs. It has been used in Skype, GoogleTalk and other services. It already works with some Android devices, and buying Webia will help D2 extend into Android set-top boxes and connected TVs. Webia introduced its Android set-top box and unveiled an Android TV solution at Broadband Taiwan 2010.

D2 picked up on Android fairly early on, long before Android mobile phones had a major impact. Android set-top box developments have become increasingly frequent over the last year or so.

As a result of the all-stock deal. Webia CEO John Wu is joining D2 as vice president of products for the company’s Mobile and Personal Communications Business Unit. In this position, he will be responsible for leading product development and management from D2’s Taiwan offices.
