Vanu draws a crowd at CTIA
NEW ORLEANS--The world beat a path to the small booth of Vanu Software this week at the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association trade show as the company introduced Vanu Software Radio, a working version of its software-defined radio technology, and announced partnerships and a summer trial with Mid-Tex Cellular.

Though still in development, Vanu’s software base station technology showed it can support several different mobile technologies simultaneously and help users of different technologies interoperate, particularly users in the public safety arena where multiple radio technologies abound.
Vanu will trial its software base station this summer with Mid-Tex using ADC’s Digivance radio-over-fiber technology. “The interoperability with ADC went very quickly,” said Vanu Bose, founder and CEO of Vanu Software. “It helped put us ahead of schedule on rolling out this product.”
Bose also said that due to the continued realization of Moore’s Law that keeps boosting processing power, the cost per channel of his software solution continues to head downward.
Vanu also announced a partnership with HP to co-market the Vanu Software Radio. HP will provide the technology on its carrier-grade server platform running Linux. While Vanu demonstrated its technology from the HP booth, the Vanu booth was one of the most crowded at the sparsely attended show.
Asked if he was concerned about giving away too many technology secrets to curious competitors by demonstrating his developing technology, Bose said, “If there are no spies, you’re not doing anything interesting.”
