According to Cingular, the outage was resolved by about 8:15 p.m. CST. During the outage, some customers could still make outgoing calls, but none could receive incoming calls. Despite rumors that the outage impacted as many as 13 states, a Cingular spokesperson said the problem was limited to Texas and triggered by a series of computer malfunctions beginning in the Houston area.

Cingular maintains the problem had nothing to do with network and services integration issues resulting from its merger with AT&T Wireless.
