Cingular opens data markets, buys Nokia MMS gear

Cinglar Wireless has made several markets in parts of Texas and Florida the latest to receive GSM/GPRS data service and new phone models to go along with it.

Cingular officials said the company invested $166 million in upgrades, among them GSM/GPRS deployment, in its North Texas markets, including the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. It expects to spend another $390 million by the end of this year in expanding coverage. In South Florida, where the new coverage includes such locales as Miami, Vero Beach and Key West, the company has invested about $180 million in network upgrades over the last two years, including a $100 million GSM/GPRS deployment.

The carrier also is launching 12 new phone models in its Texas markets and 16 new devices in South Florida.

In other Cingular news, the company has deployed Nokia’s Multimedia Message Service Center and Multimedia Application Gateway to deliver MMS applications to its customers. MMS-enabled phones available in Cingular’s GSM/GPRS markets include the Nokia 3600 smartphone, as well as models from SonyEricsson and Siemens.
