The relationship between Cingular and Openwave follows NTT DoCoMo’s announcement that it is using Bitfone’s OTA flash update technology.

The Openwave Mobile Device Manager (MDM) is a standards-compliant, wireless device management solution allowing post-sale management and uploads to wireless devices. MDM provides for one-click service activation for customers, and also supports remote diagnosis and re-configuration of activated handsets. Most OTA platform vendors have indicated that carriers are interested in using the technology to de-bug phones in circulation, or provide users with new firmware versions as they become available.

Cingular already uses other Openwave solutions, including the Openwave Mobile Access Gateway, an integrated gateway for WAP 1 and WAP 2 devices that supports MMS, download and XHTML content browsing services. Openwave MDM supports GSM operator protocols such as Openwave Primary Provisioning 2.0; Nokia OTA versions 4.5, 6.5 and 7.0; Nokia Smart Messaging version 3.0.0; WAP Provisioning and the Open Mobile Alliance DM 1.1.
