Centennial celebration for Ericsson

Centennial Communications’ U.S. Wireless Operations unit has chosen Ericsson as its sole supplier for the five-year project to migrate its existing TDMA network to EDGE-ready GSM/GPRS technology.

By upgrading its TDMA networks in the 850 MHz band, the predominantly rural carrier will be set to offer mobile data services on par with its two largest roaming partners, AT&T Wireless and Cingular Wireless. Both of these carriers already have fully adopted GPRS technology and also have begun software-based EDGE upgrades that will provide even more data bandwidth. Ericsson was one of AT&T’s primary suppliers in its migration project.

Phillip H. Mayberry, president of Centennial's US Wireless Operations, said that upgrading within Centennial’s existing frequency band will make ongoing network maintenance and other upgrades easier to handle. He said the company eventually plans to adopt EDGE once the GSM/GPRS conversion is finished.
