XO upgrades to OC-192

While many providers are pulling back, XO Communications is apparently plodding forward. The company revealed today that it is migrating its services and customer traffic to a new OC-192 IP backbone. The provider is using Juniper Networks’ M160s and M40s to complete the upgrade.

So far, the upgrade is about 75% complete and will be finished by year-end, according to Henry Clark, senior network architect at XO.

XO upgraded to OC-192 on its intercity network, and it will run the M160s between them. XO’s IP core locations of Dallas, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and New York will be served by that OC-192 capacity. The rest of the XO markets will be connected through dual OC-12c circuits.

“It is very highly protected and redundant,” Clark said. “It has no IP single point of failure. The uplinks are protected by Sonet rings and the OC-192 circuits in the core are routed diversely.”

XO expects the upgrade to help its bottom line, because it will not have to lease capacity and can offer more advanced data services. Those advanced services include prioritized applications such as voice over IP and unified messaging.
