Wireless video operations fold for BellSouth

(Satellite Broadband) BellSouth plans to shutdown its wireless video operations and to transfer the roughly 80,000 existing subs to EchoStar, according to C.E. Unterberg, Towbin.

The transition is expected to begin in January 2001 and likely to be completed by mid year.

BellSouth’s action means that it is shelving its plan to be a third DBS competitor.

In May 2000, BellSouth said it would launch a regional satellite television service by 2001. The unit reportedly had 120,000 subs.
