Winstar exits wireline, slashes staff

IDT plans to bring its newly acquired Winstar unit to profitability by the end of the year by quitting the wireline resale business and eliminating 65% of its existing non-sales work force. IDT also said it would cut off Winstar wireless business in certain smaller markets and consolidate facilities and functions within IDT.

On the positive side, IDT plans for Winstar to increase the overall size of its fixed wireless network by adding about 600 new buildings--bringing the total to 4,000--in the 22 cities in which it will maintain operations and significantly expand its sales force.

IDT bought the bankrupt fixed wireless provider in December.
