Under terms of the deal, Verizon will set up kiosks in the retail outlets that will be directly connected to its line information database. Potential customers will be able to input their phone number from the kiosk to determine if they live within the required range of a deployed DSL access multiplexer. The stores, located throughout Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland, will provide space as well as customer service at the point of sale.

Westell will offer Best Buy most of the training, which has becoming increasingly important in the retail environment.

“The worst thing to happen for retailers is for modems to be coming back,” said Van Cullens, president and CEO of Westell.

Verizon, along with most other telcos, has been anxious to get DSL modems into the retail environment in part because it takes the cost off its own books.
