Westell sharpens focus on broadband access solutions market

Westell Technologies yesterday announced it has reorganized to better focus its business strategy to become a leader in the broadband access solutions market.

The company’s organizational model is expected to focus the business on five core areas: customer networking equipment; carrier transport and multiplexers; carrier service access; outside plant enclosures and accessories; and conferencing services. In addition, the company eliminated some activities and about 125 employees--14% of its total work force--who were not in did not fit in the new business model.

Westell expects the changes related to its streamlining plan, including the reduction of work force and the elimination of unprofitable programs, to save the company about $15 million annually. The company plans to take a charge of an estimated $2.3 million during its second quarter, which ends Sept. 30.
