New Enterprise Associates, an IT and healthcare industry venture capital firm, led the most recent round, though Vonage did not name other investors, if any. Vonage officials said the capital would be used to build out its residential and small-business voice-over-IP service, expand its current menu of IP services and help market the fledgling company to a broader customer base. Vonage currently has more than 70,000 lines in service.

As part of the financing deal, New Enterprise partner Harry Weller will join the Vonage board of directors. NEA specializes in early stage investments and plays an active management role in its companies. With $5 billion to invest, NEA over the past 25 years has backed 500 companies, 125 of which have gone public and 150 of which have been acquired.
