Virginia Utility Slashes Plant Emissions

The Virginia Electric Power Co. has agreed to slash emissions of sulfur dioxide and smog-forming nitrogen oxides from eight coal-burning plants in Virginia and West Virginia. The actions are part of a $1.2 billion agreement that settles a lawsuit filed by New York State's attorney general and a notice of violation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The agencies had charged that Virginia Electric violated the clean air act by making "major modifications" to its coal-burning plants without installing pollution controls.

Similar federal suits are pending against several other major electric utilities, including Cinergy, American Electric Power, First Energy, Southern Company, Illinois Power and Southern Indiana Gas and Electric. (Earlier this year, Tampa Electric reached a cleanup agreement after being cited for similar violations of the law.)
