Verizon Wireless to test advanced services

Orlando, Fla.--Verizon Wireless plans to test the take-up rate of advanced high-speed data services in two markets in the coming months. The carrier plans to deploy 1X Evolution Data Only (1X EV DO) in San Diego and Washington D.C. to understand the demand for wireless data running at 2.4 megabits per second.

“There is risk in the if-you-build-it-they-will-come mentality,” said Bill Stone, Executive Director of network strategy with Verizon Wireless. “We are uncertain about market demand.”

Verizon plans to test the service with enterprise and the consumer market using PCMCIA cards and more traditional form factors such as wireless-enabled PDAs. Verizon wants to know how much customers might be willing to pay and what applications they are looking.

“My gut feeling is that it will be popular in the enterprise market,” said Stone. “But I could be wrong.”
