Rhode Island marks the fifth state for which Verizon has received approval. Previously the carrier was cleared to provide incumbent long distance service in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Verizon also has applications pending in New Jersey and Vermont.

According to the FCC, competing carriers serve 119,000 access lines (16% of the total) in Rhode Island. Of these, about 94,000 lines are served via the use of unbundled network elements or the CLECs’ own facilities, while 25,000 lines are served through resale. About 38% of the total lines are residential.

“This clears the way for consumers and businesses in Rhode Island to be able to get a full palette of telecommunications services from Verizon, a company they know and trust,” said Tom Tauke, Verizon senior vice president of public policy and external affairs, in a statement.
