According to the commission, competitive carriers serve about 21,500 lines in Vermont. About 5600 lines use unbundled network elements or are facilities-based, while about 15,900 lines are served via resale.

With the addition of Vermont, Verizon now has secured 271 approval in six states—New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island are the others. The carrier has applications pending in New Jersey and Maine. Verizon currently is the fourth-largest long-distance service provider in the United States, with 8 million customers in 41 states.
