The association says it will work with Congress on the passage of legislation to encourage the deployment of broadband networks.

According to Lytle, current regulations foster a digital divide, causing delays in the delivery of technological advances to many rural areas.

Last year, the association worked with other industry sectors and consumer groups to develop the Coalition for Affordable Local and Long-Distance Services. The coalition was designed to ensure universal service and a path to a more competitive marketplace, Lytle says.

The association plans to continue to work with the telecom industry to reduce taxes customers pay on their telephone service. The association says it will continue to push for the removal of unnecessary regulatory mandates that deter company investment in customer networks and services.
