"The main emphasis here is improvements in scalability," said Tim Shetler, vice president of marketing for TimesTen.

Initially, such capabilities won’t be needed by the vast majority of the company’s customers—typically packet infrastructure vendors—though some on the leading edge are starting to demand it, he said. In the latest release of the software, the company also has included the abitliy to run on completely diskless systems, simpler setup of a network of replicated TimesTen data stores, network efficient replication that "cascades" from one level of systems to another; and multi-processor concurrency that extends the effective range for TimesTen applications to 8-way platforms.

Though currently available on smaller servers such as Sun’s Netra, TimesTen plans to announce later this year the ability to run on larger servers. In fact, bumping up the performance of its software was aimed specifically at such a migration. However, Shetler said, little would change with the basic attributes.

"The core attributes of the product are all sacrosanct," he said.
