When a user attempts to access a file through Oracle iFS, the file is diverted to the CarrierScan Server for virus scanning. The component automatically scans documents managed by iFS for threats such as viruses, worms, mobile code and Trojan Horses.
“We’ve created a new plug-in, which uses CarrierScan Server,” said Steve Trilling, director of advance technologies for Symantec. “So we have not actually made changes to CarrierScan server for this product, but we have created a new piece of software which installs directly into the iFS system.”
The Oracle iFS is the front end to Oracle databases where documents and files can be accessed from e-mail, Web browsers, Windows computers or file transfer protocol.
The CarrierScan Server allows companies to incorporate scanning and antivirus software for applications that deliver files over the Internet. It uses Symantec technologies such as NAVEX, which is a real time extensible engine that allows for the deployment of new anti-virus engines without disrupting the scanning service. The CarrierScan server has been on the market for about a year.
“CarrierScan Server is a network-based antivirus product, Trilling said. “It’s a way for service providers that may have all sorts of proprietary applications such as Yahoo mail to be able to integrate antivirus scanning and protect all their users and customers from viruses through the files that are being delivered to them.”
