Sycamore unveils software to link metro, long haul networks

Anaheim, Calif. (Telephony)--With metro networks at the forefront of concern for service providers and vendors, finding ways to operate those networks at the lowest possible cost and with the most efficiency is key. At this week’s Optical Fiber Communications conference, Sycamore Networks revealed two new service modules to intelligently link the SN 3000 optical access switch and the SN 8000 optical transport system.

The modules are intended to bring down infrastructure costs, make network management easier and let service providers offer optical services to towns and cities not served by backbone and metro core networks, according to John Galloway, senior management product marketing of optical access at Sycamore.

“This will let service providers eliminate equipment,” Galloway said. “They can have a clean connection to the long haul [networks] from the metro,” he said.

Essentially, a direct connection can be made between transport devices at a hub site and access equipment at a remote location. To further simplify the network, Sycamore’s SILVX Optical Management System can be used throughout the entire network, providing an intelligent optical network, according to Galloway.

The first shipments of the modules will be next month, Galloway said.
