Sprint will sell a Samsung phone equipped with global positioning system location functionality for $149.99.

However, service will not be available until November and even then it only will be available in one market. Sprint plans to launch the service in Rhode Island next month and expand to other areas in coordination with public-safety agencies.

Despite the Oct. 1 deadline, all of the major wireless carriers, including Verizon Wireless, Cingular Wireless, AT&T Wireless Services and others, have asked the FCC to approve waivers extending the timetables for complying with the wireless enhanced 911 (E911) rules. The Commission is expected to rule on those requests in the next week.
