Under the plan, ICN’s Access Solutions, Wireline Network Communications and Optical Networks will be merged into one unit, called Carrier Solutions, with sales, development and administration for the new division consolidated into a single organization. Because of the change, Siemens will cut 2300 positions in Germany, which will count toward an already-announce headcount reduction.

According to Siemens, the change should improve the ICN’s cost structure, better aligning it with today’s weak market.

The announcement is the latest sign of that Siemen’s communications unit continues to struggle. In the previous quarter, ICN posted earnings before interest and taxes of negative $82 million, and an even steeper loss is anticipated for the current quarter.--Toby Weber, staff writer
