“Bill’s unique blend of business and governmental experience, combined with his strong leadership and management abilities will serve SBC well in today’s environment,” said Whitacre in a statement.

Most recently, Daley served as vice chairman of Evercore Capital Partners, a New York City-based private equity investment firm. Prior to Evercore, Daley was manager for former Vice President Al Gore’s presidential election campaign after serving as commerce secretary from January 1997 to June 2000.

Daley’s political connections were established well before he burst onto the national scene, as he is the brother of current Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and the son of former the late Richard J. Daley, Chicago’s mayor from 1955 to 1976.

At SBC Daley will be responsible for strategic planning, regulatory matters and external affairs. He begins his tenure Dec. 1.
