Samsung signs software licensing deal with Nokia

Nokia today announced that Korean wireless vendor Samsung will license Nokia’s Series 60 platform for smart phones. The deal is a major coup for Nokia as Samsung is not only a CDMA vendor but also one of the few major handset vendors backing the Microsoft Pocket PC platform.

The Series 60 application suite rides on top of the Symbian operating system, which is backed by the wireless handset vendor community. While Microsoft has been pushing its Pocket PC platform to carriers and consumer electronics and computer manufacturers, Symbian and its developer partners have secured licensing deals from the vendors manufacturing the majority of the world’s wireless devices.

No financial details of the deal were released.
